Tinted glasses for migraines or photosensitivity, particularly those with FL-41 or Contrast Control Protection (CCP), are designed to filter out specific blue-green wavelengths (around 380-520 nm) known to trigger or worsen light sensitivity (photophobia) and headaches. They effectively reduce strain from artificial, fluorescent lighting and screen glare, helping to decrease the frequency and intensity of attacks.

FL-41 Lenses use a precision rose-coloured tint to filter out specific wavelengths of blue-green light (roughly 480–520 nm) that are known to trigger or worsen migraines and photophobia
FL-41 lenses are specifically designed to address neurological light sensitivity rather than general digital eye strain.
Targeted Filtration: They block approximately 80% of the blue wavelengths that trigger eye pain, dizziness, and headaches, particularly those emitted by fluorescent lights and digital screens
Symptom Relief: Beyond reducing attack frequency, they can lower photophobia severity scores by roughly 65% and allow for longer reading duration under harsh lighting.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Use: Lighter tints (approx. 25–50%) are ideal for indoor office environments to combat fluorescent flicker, while darker or polarized versions (approx. 75–80%) are tailored for bright sunlight.

Tokai CCP400 (Contrast Control Protection) lenses are specialized medical filters designed to reduce glare and enhance contrast by suppressing high-energy blue light. Developed by Tokai Optical in Japan, these lenses specifically target the wavelengths below 500nm, which is often responsible for visual discomfort and glare in individuals with certain eye conditions.
Enhanced Contrast: By removing scattered blue light, the lenses sharpen the edges of objects and improve depth perception.
Reduced Eye Fatigue: Minimise the energy consumed by the eyes when trying to focus in glary or high-brightness environments.
UV and HEV Protection: Provides 100% protection against harmful UV rays and high-energy violet light.
Natural Colour Perception: Despite the tint, they are designed to maintain a relatively natural visual environment.

We do not supply Irlen lenses - which involves the use of coloured overlays/lenses which are proposed to filter out particular wavelengths, thereby reducing symptoms and improving reading. The diagnosis is based solely on self reported symptoms and subjective responses to the coloured lenses, which are individually selected.
We abide by the RANZCO position statement on Irlen lenses Aug 2025 : " There remains no reliable evidence to support the claims that Irlen lenses are beneficial in improving reading ability"
For patients with dyslexia or learning difficulties, we follow an evidence based model, by correcting for any refractive error (short/long sightedness) and optimising binocular vision.
The use of blue blocking antiglare coatings may be somewhat beneficial for use on digital devices by reducing bothersome glare, though no largescale studies exist to support their use.
