Ortho-K or Orthokeratology on the Central Coast NSW

Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K, is a non-invasive overnight contact lens technology that is used to correct myopia (short-sightedness) and slow down its progression. These uniquely crafted contact lenses are worn overnight, gently shaping the cornea to ensure clear vision throughout the day without the necessity for glasses or daytime contact lenses (much like invisible braces for your teeth). 

 As myopia rates continue to rise worldwide due to increased screen usage and decreased outdoor activities, interventions such as Ortho-K are becoming increasingly prevalent.  Clinical studies have shown that Ortho-K can effectively slow the progression of myopia in children, making it a compelling choice for parents who are concerned about their child's long-term ocular health.  

What is the Cost of Ortho-K Lenses? 

The price of Ortho-K lenses can differ based on the complexity of the lens, the strength of the prescription, and the extent of follow-up care needed.  

The expected cost ranges from $400 to $850 per lens. Each lens has a lifespan of approximately 12 to 18 months before it needs to be replaced.

Custom Design – Ortho-K lenses are customized to fit the specific shape of your cornea, necessitating detailed eye mapping and specialized lens production. 

Prescription Complexity – More complex prescriptions or irregular corneas may demand more sophisticated lens designs.

Brand and Material – There are various brands of Ortho-K lenses, with price differences based on the materials used and the technology involved.  

How Does Ortho-K Compare to Other Vision Correction Options?

In terms of expenses, Ortho-K is similar to the long-term costs associated with daily disposable contact lenses.

Although the initial investment is higher, it removes the need for daily contacts and provides a sustainable solution for managing myopia. 

Is Ortho-K Suitable for You or Your Child? 

Ortho-K is particularly advantageous for children and adolescents, although adults may also derive benefits from this treatment. All major clinical studies and international Optometry Associations have approved Ortho-K as a safe and effective treatment for myopia in children and adolescents.
